Bolt and Shoelaces

From time to time it happens that I have to redo my shoelaces while running. Sometimes it is becouase they became undone. Sometimes is it because that get to tight later on in the run. It is good to know it happens even to the best of the world. I expect that everyone has seen the images of Usain Bolt winning in Beijing and setting an new world record with his shoelaces undone!

As this picture from the Reebok Grand Prix Saturday, June 2, 2007, in New York shows this is not an incident. Bolt ran the 200meter. Check out his laces of the left shoe (again):

Tis blijkbaar toch moeilijk, vetersstrikken....

over hundred or not?

Remember I mentioned a 101 year old taking part in London marathon? As it now appears there is some dispute about his age....The Guinness Book of Records gives the men only 94 years due to his date of birth on his NHS papers. His passport states 101!
To me it is still a major achievement finishing a marathon at this age even though it takes him close to 10 hours. Read the story of his life and the dispute in the Guardian.

World Record on the 100 metres

From a post on the longest running distance: the marathon (ultra runs excluded), to a post on the shortest outdoor distance. The 100 meters!
Last weekend Usian Bolt ran his fifth 100 meter race ever and lowered the world record to a stunning 9:72. Just think of it that he is only running the 100 meters to increase his speed for the 200 meters as you can read in this times article.

New world best Half marathon women

During the world championchips on the road in Udine, Italy, Lorna Kiplagat sets a new world best. New record is 1:06:25, 19 seconds faster than the previous worldbest of South African Elana Meyer run eight years ago in Tokyo. "Everything just went perfect today" according to the Gaurdian.
When I started this blog I addressed the fact that Dutch in English can have a negative ring to it. However the Kenian born Kiplagat has the Dutch nationality as well so she gives a new meaning to Running Dutch.

Weekend of extremes: from 100 meters worldrecord to a 100k ultra run

Last weekend was a weekend of extremes in running term. Asafa Powell improved his world record on the shortest outdoor distance, the 100 meter. He set the new time to beat on 9.74 seconds. A lead physiologist for the English Institute of Sport says "There is no sign that the 100m world record is slowing up" on BBC sport. He also expects that Powell will be able to lower the record to 9.7 in due time thanks to his explosive start.

On the other end of the scale was the 100k run in Winschoten with the Dutch Championchips, the European Championchips and the WMA Championchips. This was won by the Russian runner Oleg Kharitonov in a time of 6 hours, 30 minutes and 22 seconds. Check out the site for more results.

And on the scale from profesionalism to well....lets say enthousiasm...
I took part as a member of the relay team from my work on the 10 times 10km relay. We had two teams taking part. Before we tried to balance the teams so we could have a compitition between the to teams which worked out very well. In the end we finished just over two minutes apart. Picture shows me at the start of my 10k as last runner of one of the teams. Great thing of being the last runner of the team in a relay? Every other last runner you are overtaking (to be recognized by the 0 as the last digit of the number) means you are climbing one extra place in the final results. I am clad to say I overtook a a couple of runners without being overtaken myself!
